Ron is one of the most distinctive voices in comedy – in terms of both his material and his actual voice. His giggly, laid-back stand-up comedy made him the toast of Portland, Ore. But in the last few years he has busted out on the national stage, with roles in sitcoms (“Undateable” and “Powerless”), movies (“Trolls”) and lots more. His one-hour Comedy Central special "Giggle Fit" broke all kinds of ratings records and he even has a new podcast called "Gettin' Better." Check out a true original.

Ashley Hesseltine is the co-host of the wildly popular podcast "Girls Gotta Eat." Ashley hails from Delaware (and is the self-proclaimed "second-most famous person from the state" after Joe Biden), began standup comedy in Atlanta, and lives in and performs all over New York City. She's (probably) been called "the voice of her generation" by someone, and Popdust says "Ashley Hesseltine breathed new life to jokes about basic white womanhood; she could've easily given us ten minutes of "wine and bad boyfriends, amirite LADIES?", and instead she gave us vulnerability and raw honesty (who among us DOESN'T relate to stalking the ex that they dumped?)."

July 21 - July 23
No two Flip Orley shows are the same, which is why he's been a DC Improv favorite since the 1990s. Flip uses hypnosis to turn audience members into the stars of the show. He leads volunteers through twisted scenarios, getting reactions that are almost beyond belief – and he does it all without humiliating anyone. Whether you’re on stage or watching from the audience, Flip’s show is unforgettable. And no, we weren’t hypnotized into writing this.

Buy TicketsComedy Kumite: Champions
July 24
It's a battle of the best! Every few months, the Improv brings great DMV comics together for a one-night stand-up tournament. Each "match" has comics doing sets, and the audience chooses one person to advance. At the end of the night, we have a champion. The winners represent the best of what DC's comedy scene has to offer.
For this special show, former winners return to the Improv to battle for the title of Grand Champion. The best of the best will be duking it out ... and no matter which comedian is victorious, the audience always wins.

Pun DMV
August 04
Come out and wordplay! You're invited to watch or compete in Pun DMV, our pun contest. The night is hosted by Dana Fleitman, and it has two events:
The Tournament: An on-the-spot punning tournament featuring up to 20 people. At the start of each match, contestants are given a theme. They then take turns making up puns on the spot. People are eliminated when they're stumped. The last person standing moves on to the next round (or victory)! Anyone in attendance can compete, and you can sign up on site when you arrive.
The Freestyle: Each competitor chooses a punning theme, then prepares in advance a two-minute speech packed with puns inspired by that theme. On the night of the show, the competitors deliver their speeches on stage. We'll pick a few finalists, based on quality of puns and overall delivery. Then the audience will decide the winner by cheering. If you'd like to compete in the Freestyle for the August 4 show let us know via the form at this link.
The winners of either contest get prizes from the Improv (and eternal glory)!

Some stand-ups really know how to work a room. "Crowd work" is the art of chatting with the audience when on stage. When done right, it creates a conversational atmosphere -- sometimes building a bridge to a comedian's best jokes, and sometimes leading to totally unscripted, in-the-moment laughs.
Here in the DMV, Tim Miller is one of the best at crowd work. At "Read the Room" he hosts a lineup of local talents doing predominantly crowd work. Join him in our lounge showroom for what could be a unique, unforgettable live comedy experience.
Tim has been on Comedy Central & TRU TV and is also the host of Read the Room podcast on Podbean, iTunes and wherever you enjoy podcasts.
