This class can do it all. People use Beginning Improv training to kick-start their creative mind, meet new people, and improve teamwork skills. It can give you great new perspective on your everyday interactions, introduce you to a new hobby, or even serve as a first step into the entertainment world. Best of all, it's a LOT of fun.

This is the course where you'll learn the basics of improv. You'll also learn a number of games you can play just about anywhere, learn how to develop scenes and create characters within seconds, and learn exercises to help create "group mind" to better work and act together. Remember, improv isn't just for actors -- anyone from teachers to corporate trainers to anyone wanting to build stronger teams can benefit from the collaborative art of improv comedy.

This session, instructor Chris Ulrich dives deep into the Pretty Flower format. We’ll start with strong, grounded scene work as your foundation. From there, we’ll explore and connect the tangential scenes -— those "petals" that orbit around the core idea. We’ll dig into emotional and thematic connections, working on smooth transitions and experimenting with different styles and tone. By the end, you’ll confidently bring the Pretty Flower format to life, creating rich, multi-layered performances that are uniquely yours.

Prerequisite: Level 4 (i.e. Harold) or advanced long-form experience required

Picking up from the beginning level course, students will focus on making powerful choices at the top of the scene and how building fun and dynamic characters will enhance their overall experience. Through short-form scene work and games, students will explore how physicality, object work, character and interacting with their environment can inform the scene and set them up for success. The course includes 5 classes and a final graduation performance at the DC Improv. Prerequisite: Beginning Improv or permission of the instructor and principal.

We're passing the Daylight Savings on to you! As clocks fall back, we're challenging the funny people of the DMV to come up with five minutes of comedy on the theme of NIGHT -- which could include any of the good or bad things that happen under cover of darkness. The best teams go home with a cash prize. The Make Up Party is the DC Improv's game night, open to all kinds of performers. Whether you're hopping on stage or in the crowd, it's gonna be a good time.

Actor and comedian Jamie Lissow is currently a regular weekly guest on the #1 rated late night talk show, "Gutfeld!" on Fox. Jamie is best known for his starring role in two seasons of the Netflix Original Series “Real Rob”, alongside SNL alums Rob Schneider, Adam Sandler, Norm MacDonald and David Spade; a show Jamie co-wrote and co-produced. Jamie has appeared on "The Tonight Show," "The Late Late Show," "Last Comic Standing," has his own half hour Comedy Central special and a Dry Bar Comedy Special with over 20 Million views. Jamie recently wrapped his first movie, "Daddy Daughter Trip," where he appears alongside John Cleese, Rob Schneider, and Micheal Bublé - a movie he co-wrote and produced. Michelle Wolf has established herself as one of the most influential voices in the comedy landscape. The Village Voice calls her “the voice comedy needs right now,” and The Daily Beast declared, “Michelle Wolf is the future of stand-up comedy.” Most recently, Wolf released her third stand up special, “Michelle Wolf: It’s Great to Be Here”, a series of three 30-minute episodes on Netflix. The special premiered to rave reviews and rose to the Top 10 most watched TV on Netflix. Her previous special “Michelle Wolf: Joke Show” is also on the platform. In 2018, Wolf made international headlines as the much-buzzed-about headliner of the White House Correspondents Dinner.

In improv comedy the audience is the biggest uncontrollable factor a performer faces. Join Anna Bethel to explore the skill of "reading a room" in order to harness the admiration of the audience. Students will work together in exercises to improve spontaneous mental recall and learn how to perform and moderate short-form improv games. The result of quick thinking and reacting will give a performer the confidence to face any crowd. Prerequisite: Level 1 and 2 or permission from instructor and principal.

These events are at President Lincoln's Cottage, which sells all the tickets and sets venue policies.

Enjoy a comedy show at one of DC's coolest historic homes! Since 2016, President Lincoln's Cottage and the DC Improv have collaborated on The Two Faces comedy series, bringing live entertainment to Abraham Lincoln's favorite retreat. Each year the series features three comedy shows, each with a theme that ties back to either the Lincolns or the way they used the cottage.

This year's series features the following shows:

• September 25: Insomnia. Abe Lincoln often had trouble sleeping, and so do all the performers in this showcase lineup.
• October 16: Small Town Roots. Much like Abe, the performers on this show started out in small town settings before making their way to the big city.
• November 13: Stages of Life. The Lincoln family, and Mary Todd in particular, went through some life transitions during their cottage years. These comics will talk about transitions in their own life.

President Lincoln’s Cottage is an historic site and museum located in the Petworth neighborhood in Northwest Washington, D.C. President Lincoln’s Cottage first opened to the public in February 2008. It is the only place the public can experience the history of Abraham Lincoln’s public and private life where he lived and worked for over a quarter of his presidency. While in residence at the Cottage, Lincoln visited with wounded soldiers, spent time with self-emancipated men, women and children, and developed the Emancipation Proclamation. The human cost of the Civil War surrounded him, undoubtedly impacted his thinking, and strengthened his resolve to challenge the status quo. Through innovative guided tours, exhibits and programs, we use Lincoln’s example to inspire visitors to take their own path to greatness, and preserve this place as an authentic, tangible connection to the past and a beacon of hope for all who take up Lincoln’s unfinished work.

Some stand-ups really know how to work a room. Crowd work is the art of chatting with the audience when on stage. When done right, it creates a conversational atmosphere -- sometimes building a bridge to a comedian's best jokes, and sometimes leading to totally unscripted, in-the-moment laughs.

Here in the DMV, Tim Miller is one of the best at crowd work. At "Read the Room" he hosts a lineup of local talents doing a mix of crowd work and material. Join him in our lounge showroom for a unique, unforgettable live comedy experience.

Julie Kim is one of Canada’s top stand-up comedians, and she recently toured across North America doing 40 theatre shows with Ronny Chieng. Through hands-on training with instructor Chris Coccia, you'll learn how to prepare, polish and perform a five-minute stand-up comedy set. A tight, funny, five-minute set can carry you through a comedy career from start to stardom. It can be your open stage set, it can be your audition set and it can be your spot on any number of late-night shows. Lots of people have dreamed about giving stand-up comedy a try. This class gives you the structured environment that will finally get you on stage. Please note: Students must have access to a device with a webcam and microphone to participate in individual coaching sessions. The instructor commutes from Philadelphia to teach in person courses, and on occasion start time of the class may be delayed slightly due to Amtrak changes.

Come out and wordplay! You're invited to watch or compete in Pun DMV, our pun contest. The night is hosted by Dana Fleitman, and it has two events:

The Freestyle: Each competitor chooses a punning theme, then prepares in advance a three-minute speech packed with puns inspired by that theme. On the night of the show, the competitors deliver their speeches on stage. The audience favorite wins! If you're interested in competing, let us know by filling out the form at this link.

The Tournament: An on-the-spot punning tournament featuring up to 20 people. At the start of each match, contestants are given a theme. They then take turns making up puns on the spot. People are eliminated when they're stumped. The last person standing moves on to the next round (or victory). Anyone in attendance can compete, and you can sign up on site when you arrive.

The winners of either contest get cash prizes from the Improv (and eternal glory)!

The improv troupe Jive Turkey has been on the DC scene since 2008, performing sharp long-form improv in front of millions of screaming fans. Picking up from the beginning level course, students will focus on making powerful choices at the top of the scene and how building fun and dynamic characters will enhance their overall experience. Comedian CP does it all: He's a sought-after writer, an accomplished producer and a great actor. (Right now you can see him doing all three on the Hulu show "How to Die Alone.") Fahim is a comedy Renaissance man, finding success in stand-up, sketch comedy, TV writing and (naturally) dancing. A former aerospace engineer, the Seattle native released his third special "House Money" online, showcasing his sharp, light-hearted observational style to a global audience. A favorite on the NYC scene, Phil Hanley started performing stand-up in Vancouver. Phil self-released his recent stand-up special "Ooh La La" on his YouTube channel. Trey Kennedy takes the DC Improv stage for the first time, as part of his Win-Win Tour working out new material. As Trey puts it: "If a new joke's funny, you laugh! If it's not, you still laugh (at me)! It's a win-win!"

Trey is a born and raised Oklahoman who never expected to enter the entertainment industry. While attending college at Oklahoma State University, Trey found fame on the mobile app Vine, amassing more than 2.5 million followers. He has now continued his social media success on platforms such as Instagram and TikTok where he has a combined 12+ million followers. Trey's self-produced comedy special "Are You For Real?" can now be streamed on YouTube.
