Sketch Night
June 29 - September 21
Sketch comedy takes over our lounge showroom, courtesy of DC's favorite troupe. While entertaining the DMV for a decade, Bad Medicine has also been showcasing around the country. Now they're bringing in some of their favorite performers from DC and beyond, presenting them in the city's top comedy spot.
The June lineup: Forevermore, The Incredible Shrinking Matt & Jacquie, Grace and the Gang
About Bad Medicine: The Bad Medicine Show is high energy sketch comedy with a bent toward the dark, absurd reality of life. Each show brings you new hilarious characters, videos, music, and of course sketches about situations you hope you'll never be in. They love to give folks an evening of laughter, but deep down, Bad Medicine is simply a group of friends trying hard to forget the political town they live in.

Short-Form Improv: Characters & Emotions

Wednesdays, July 17 - August 14, 7 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. Graduation show Monday, August 19 at 7:30 p.m. Participants in this class must be vaccinated against COVID-19.

Students will play short-form games and exercises that they've seen on "Whose Line Is It Anway?", and in the DC Improv's Lounge. The class concludes with a graduation performance at the DC Improv. Prerequisite: Beginning Improv or permission of the instructor and principal.

Read the Room crowd work showcase
July 18 - August 15
Some stand-ups really know how to work a room. Crowd work is the art of chatting with the audience when on stage. When done right, it creates a conversational atmosphere -- sometimes building a bridge to a comedian's best jokes, and sometimes leading to totally unscripted, in-the-moment laughs.
Here in the DMV, Tim Miller is one of the best at crowd work. At "Read the Room" he hosts a lineup of local talents doing a mix of crowd work and material. Join him in our lounge showroom for a unique, unforgettable live comedy experience.
Tim has been on Comedy Central & TRU TV and is also the host of Read the Room podcast on Podbean, iTunes and wherever you enjoy podcasts.

Pun DMV
August 27
Come out and wordplay! You're invited to watch or compete in Pun DMV, our pun contest. The night is hosted by Dana Fleitman, and it has two events:
The Freestyle: Each competitor chooses a punning theme, then prepares in advance a three-minute speech packed with puns inspired by that theme. On the night of the show, the competitors deliver their speeches on stage. The audience favorite wins! If you're interested in competing, let us know by filling out the form at this link.
The Tournament: An on-the-spot punning tournament featuring up to 20 people. At the start of each match, contestants are given a theme. They then take turns making up puns on the spot. People are eliminated when they're stumped. The last person standing moves on to the next round (or victory). Anyone in attendance can compete, and you can sign up on site when you arrive.
The winners of either contest get cash prizes from the Improv (and eternal glory)!

Improv with Kaneez Workshop
September 07
Saturday, September 7, 12 p.m. - 3 p.m.
Kaneez Surka’s "Improv With Kaneez" workshop is an extensive insight into the world of improv comedy where she incorporates basic improv tactics into well-crafted team building exercises and fun games to enhance productivity and focus. The workshop will be conducted over a 3-4 hour session engaging in fun interactive exercises that promote healthy leadership qualities and the ability to think outside the box.
Having trained at two of New York’s finest improv schools - the Magnet Theater and the Upright Citizen’s Brigade, Manhattan - Kaneez went on to build an improv scene in India and is lovingly known as the Improv Queen. Having taught improv to hundreds of people around India she also remains the proud creator of India’s only improv format shows - ‘Improv All Stars’ and ‘Something from Nothing’ on Amazon Prime. She is the leading Improv trainer and artist in the Indian comedy circuit and now wants to expand into the USA.
Improvisation is essentially "on the spot" or spontaneous moment of sudden inventiveness that can just come to mind, body and spirit as an inspiration. In Improv nothing is prepared, rehearsed or premeditated and that is an enormous encouragement to creativity. Learning to trust your intuition, and the people around you resulting in the invention of new thought patterns, new practices, new structures or symbols are all part of the improv experience.

Finding Your Voice: Comedy Songwriting with Seann Cantatore
September 21
Saturday, September 21, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Maximum 12 students.
Writing a song can be daunting. Writing a funny song can be even daunting-er. In this workshop, musical comedian Seann Cantatore will break down the elements of comedy songwriting into a few simple steps, and then we’ll get right into the fun part. Each student will develop their own comedy song using improv, storytelling and their unique voice. You’ll be surprised by what you’re capable of creating in a short amount of time! And the class is there to support and collaborate with you along the way. If you enjoy utter silliness, this is the workshop for you. No need to be a trained singer or instrumentalist! Musical and vocal technique is gorgeous, but it is not a prerequisite for this workshop.
About the instructor: Seann Cantatore is an NYC-based musical comedian, absurdist, and professional kind person who combines musical characters, sketch comedy and utter ridiculousness in her gorgeously entertaining shows. Seann believes in humor that welcomes everyone to the party and seeks to bring people together through laughter and song. Seann has performed throughout New York, Washington DC, Michigan, California and recently returned from a Southeast solo comedy tour. She is currently recording a new musical comedy album and performing her solo musical comedy variety show throughout NYC and the U.S.

Tired of swiping? In this dating experiment, men compete on stage for one lucky bachelorette, with the little caveat that the men can't speak. Through a series of games - which includes calling the boys' moms and unlocking their phones - we narrow it down to two men. Finally, we hear their voices, and the lucky winning man is sent with our bachelorette to the bar for an immediate date. Audience members wear wristbands according to their relationship status, and a wingcouple (who wear actual wings) helps those of you who are too shy to make a move. Created, produced, and hosted by Allison Goldberg.
