Through hands-on training with instructor Chris Coccia, you'll learn how to prepare, polish and perform a five-minute stand-up comedy set. A tight, funny, five-minute set can carry you through a comedy career from start to stardom. It can be your open stage set, it can be your audition set and it can be your spot on any number of late-night shows. Lots of people have dreamed about giving stand-up comedy a try. This class gives you the structured environment that will finally get you on stage. Please note: Students must have access to a device with a webcam and microphone to participate in individual coaching sessions. The instructor commutes from Philadelphia to teach in person courses, and on occasion start time of the class may be delayed slightly due to Amtrak changes.

AKA "Improv for Fun!" A class for people who want to learn improv games while having fun playing with other improvisers. The focus is on building confidence, communication skills and a sense of play -- improv training often helps people develop teamwork and creative thinking. While students are coached to learn new games and skills, less time is spent on preparing for a performance, and more time is spent on simply having fun. This class is both for beginning improvisers who want to learn the games they've seen in shows, and for experienced improv students who want to recapture a sense of playfulness in their games and scenes.

Martin Amini is a stand up comic based in Los Angeles, California and born and raised in Silver Spring, Maryland. Martin draws comedic inspiration from his diverse heritage, crafting a unique blend of humor that resonates universally. Growing up with an Iranian father and a Bolivian mother, Martin's multicultural background provides rich material for his stand-up routines, creating an engaging comedic experience. In addition to exploring his heritage, Martin infuses his comedy with insights from his own experiences of marriage, offering hilarious commentary on relationships that audiences can personally relate to. Moreover, Martin occasionally plays matchmaker on stage, helping audience members find love amidst the laughter.

After a sold-out DC Improv debut in 2024, Jay Jurden is returning to our stage for a full headlining weekend. Originally from Mississippi, Jay regularly performs comedy all over the country and was a staff writer for Apple TV+'s Emmy-nominated show "The Problem With Jon Stewart." Jay has performed on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" three times and has also been seen on "The Late Late Show with James Corden," Comedy Central Featuring, "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," and HBO’s "High Maintenance."

The DC Improv Comedy School is proud to present a stand-up class graduation showcase. Students who have completed the "Five Minutes to Funny" stand-up course will be taking the famous DC Improv stage to show what they learned. Drag Royalty Lady Bunny brings her all new show, "Don’t Bring the Kids," a night full of jokes, filthy fun and demented song parodies.

A talented comedienne, actress and singer, Ms. Bunny has graced your TV screen on shows like Sex and the City and RuPaul’s Drag U, and she is the emcee and creator of Wigstock, the outrageous drag festival of drag and music which electrified New Yorkers every Labor Day for over 20 years.

Now, the hilarious queen is bringing her signature and raunchy comedy to the DC Improv in her new show, "Don’t Bring the Kids." Promising her trademark blend of comedy, music, and irreverence, she’s set to take audiences on a wild ride. From her infamous parodies to her uncensored commentary on contemporary culture, Lady Bunny pulls no punches.

“This show is called 'Don’t Bring the Kids' for a reason,” she declares. “It’s not for the faint of heart, but if you’re ready to laugh and let loose, then I’ll see you there.”

Gina Yashere made her DC Improv debut back in 2018. And since then ... wow. She's taken the entertainment world by storm, recently as a co-creator, writer, producer and actor on one of the most popular sitcoms around, "Bob Hearts Abishola" (and soon to be seen on Star Trek’s new series "Starfleet Academy" on Paramount +). Born in London to Nigerian parents, this former engineer circles the globe making people laugh. Now she's finally returning to our stage for another great weekend.

Zach Noe Towers is an LA-based comedian, actor, and writer you may have seen in season three of Netflix’s "Dear White People" or hosting the E! series "Nightly Pop" and "Dating #NoFilter." Zach entered the comedy scene in 2018 when he was named one of Time Out magazine’s Comics to Watch, as well as one of the New Faces of Comedy at the prestigious Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal. Jordan Jensen started comedy in upstate New York before moving to Nashville, where she spent a year working for clubs and taking her comedy on the road in her pickup truck. Throughout Cipha Sounds’ many career turns, two elements have remained at the fore: comedy and hip-hop, his two biggest passions. AKA "Improv for Fun!" A class for people who want to learn improv games while having fun playing with other improvisers. The focus is on building confidence, communication skills and a sense of play -- improv training often helps people develop teamwork and creative thinking. While students are coached to learn new games and skills, less time is spent on preparing for a performance, and more time is spent on simply having fun. This class is both for beginning improvisers who want to learn the games they've seen in shows, and for experienced improv students who want to recapture a sense of playfulness in their games and scenes.

Use improv techniques to generate creative ideas and develop them into scripts. This workshop emphasizes spontaneity, brainstorming and converting off-the-cuff moments into polished material. Participants will learn how to embrace the creative process, refine raw ideas into compelling narratives, and collaborate effectively with others to bring their visions to life. Perfect for writers, performers, and anyone looking for tools to transform inspiration into impactful stories. Prerequisite: None.

Your instructor: Nikki Frias has contributed to Pop Sugar, Forbes, The Daily Beast, and Boardroom. She is an author, writing coach and teacher specializing in helping people find their form of funny. Join us for a supersized edition of the world's greatest stand-up competition! Each Wednesday for four straight weeks, we'll have six different performers duke it out. Each "match" has comics doing sets back-to-back, and the audience chooses one person to advance. At the end of each Wednesday, we'll have a champion ... and of course, the audience ALWAYS wins.

Once all four champs are determined, they'll return one more time for a no-holds-barred comedy battle (August 6). The winner of that match becomes our Comedy Kumite XL champion for 2025!

Wednesdays (online), July 9 – July 30, meeting at 8 p.m. each week. This is an online class, conducted through Zoom meetings. Participants must have a reliable Internet connection and a computer, phone or device with a web camera and microphone.

A beginner's guide to sketch comedy that will take you from a premise to a fully realized sketch. This course will walk you through the elements of a sketch and how to write good sketches; it also features workshop sessions where you'll do read-throughs and get feedback on the writing assignments you'll be preparing. You'll walk away with a solid grounding in the foundations of sketch comedy, as well as the knowledge of how to craft and write sketches of your own.

Your instructors for the course come from Bad Medicine, DC's premier sketch comedy troupe. Trained by the Upright Citizens Brigade and Second City, Bad Medicine has performed at North American festivals like Montreal Sketchfest, NYC Sketchfest, Chicago Sketchfest, and Sketchfest Seattle. They also produce award-winning short comedy films, and a podcast about the craft of sketch comedy called Sketch Nerds.

Tired of swiping? In this dating experiment, men compete on stage for one lucky bachelorette, with the little caveat that the men can't speak. Through a series of games - which includes calling the boys' moms and unlocking their phones - we narrow it down to two men. Finally, we hear their voices, and the lucky winning man is sent with our bachelorette to the bar for an immediate date. Audience members wear wristbands according to their relationship status, and a wingcouple (who wear actual wings) helps those of you who are too shy to make a move. With instructor Chris Ulrich. The Armando is a long form improv structure in which a monologist shares short stories from an audience suggestion that reflects true events or honest experiences. Using the monologist's detailed stories as inspiration, improvisers will be challenged to create a series of scenes and character interactions, exploring the interesting or absurd themes and ideas to discover what is funny about them. This format will challenge you to be a powerful story teller and keen listener in the moment to create a playful, funny world from a story. • "Late shows" in the main showroom have assigned seating. Assignments are made in order of ticket purchase. Generally speaking, the earlier you buy tickets, the closer you will be to the stage.
