Moshe Kasher

March 23 - March 25

Moshe Kasher always has an edge, whether he's performing his razor sharp material or doing his unbelievably good crowd work. (He even recorded a crowd work album at our club a few years ago.) As a writer, he's been a favorite at Comedy Central, working on roasts, writing and acting for "Another Period," and hosting his own show "Problematic." Check out one of the most inventive and hilarious comics working today.

Just Nesh

March 23 - March 25

Taneshia "Just Nesh" Rice is a quickly rising standup comedian from Chicago; her boundless energy and easily relatable nature make her a hit for audiences across the country. Nesh's first big break came in 2016 when she was selected to be a part of the first season of Comedy Central's Kevin Hart Presents: Hart of the City; her set was so well received that Hart and Comedy Central quickly offered her her own half-hour special, The Next Level. Grassroots Comedy: Comedy Show for Iranian Freedom

March 26

Grassroots Comedy returns to the DC Improv lounge with a belated celebration of The Iranian New Year and to raise funds and awareness in support of freedom in Iran! With a lineup of the region's funniest comedians of Middle Eastern descent including headliner Rahmein Mostafavi, with some informative tidbits mixed throughout, this show is guaranteed to be both hilarious and educational. It will highlight the current fight for democracy and women's rights in Iran and how to support it, while making you laugh so hard you might even (briefly) forget how unfunny the situation actually is. A portion of proceeds will be donated to the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) - a non-political and non-governmental organization of advocates who defend Human Rights in Iran. So put down the New Yorker and grab a friend or five for a much funnier way to support freedom and democracy in this world.

Also featured: Sunny Soroosh, Yusuf Goal, Rola Z

Prerequisite: Beginning Improv or permission of the instructor and principal.

About the Instructor: Conor O'Rourke has been performing comedy for more than 14 years. He was first introduced to improv in college, and he joined ComedySportz in 2009. It can be your open stage set, it can be your audition set and it can be your spot on any number of late-night shows. Lots of people have dreamed about giving stand-up comedy a try. This class gives you the structured environment that will finally get you on stage. Please note: Participants in this class must be vaccinated against COVID-19, and class size is limited to 14. Students must also have access to a device with a webcam and microphone to participate in individual coaching sessions. Beginning Improv with Conor O'Rourke

April 19

Available: Wednesdays, April 19 - May 17, 7 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. Participants in this class must be vaccinated against COVID-19.

AKA "Improv for Fun!" A class for people who want to learn improv games while having fun playing with other improvisers. The focus is on building confidence, communication skills and a sense of play -- improv training often helps people develop teamwork and creative thinking. While students are coached to learn new games and skills, less time is spent on preparing for a performance, and more time is spent on simply having fun. This class is both for beginning improvisers who want to learn the games they've seen in shows, and for experienced improv students who want to recapture a sense of playfulness in their games and scenes.

All sales are final. Refunds and exchanges are offered only when a show is canceled or rescheduled.

Brad Williams

April 27 - April 30

Back on our stage for the first time since 2019! Pun DMV

May 04

Come out and wordplay! You're invited to watch or compete in Pun DMV, our pun contest. The night is hosted by Dana Fleitman, and it has two events:

The Freestyle: Each competitor chooses a punning theme, then prepares in advance a three-minute speech packed with puns inspired by that theme. On the night of the show, the competitors deliver their speeches on stage. The audience favorite wins! The lineup: Emily Crews, Paul Crystal, Shatara Downs, Rose Vineshank, AJ Goldsman, Shane Gerbert, Emily Simon, Jon Hammond, Cheryl Kagan, Brittany Whitehurst.

The Tournament: An on-the-spot punning tournament featuring up to 20 people. At the start of each match, contestants are given a theme. They then take turns making up puns on the spot. People are eliminated when they're stumped. The last person standing moves on to the next round (or victory). Anyone in attendance can compete, and you can sign up on site when you arrive.

The winners of either contest get cash prizes from the Improv (and eternal glory)!

Read the Room

May 18

with Tim Miller

Some stand-ups really know how to work a room. "Crowd work" is the art of chatting with the audience when on stage. When done right, it creates a conversational atmosphere -- sometimes building a bridge to a comedian's best jokes, and sometimes leading to totally unscripted, in-the-moment laughs.

Here in the DMV, Tim Miller is one of the best at crowd work. At "Read the Room" he hosts a lineup of local talents doing predominantly crowd work. Join him in our lounge showroom for what could be a unique, unforgettable live comedy experience.

Tim has been on Comedy Central & TRU TV and is also the host of Read the Room podcast on Podbean, iTunes and wherever you enjoy podcasts.

The lineup for May 18: TBA

Finding Your Voice: Comedy Songwriting with Seann Cantatore

May 20

Saturday, May 20, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Maximum 12 students.

Writing a song can be daunting. Writing a funny song can be even daunting-er. In this workshop, musical comedian Seann Cantatore will break down the elements of comedy songwriting into a few simple steps, and then we’ll get right into the fun part. Each student will develop their own comedy song using improv, storytelling and their unique voice. You’ll be surprised by what you’re capable of creating in a short amount of time! And the class is there to support and collaborate with you along the way. If you enjoy utter silliness, this is the workshop for you. No need to be a trained singer or instrumentalist! Musical and vocal technique is gorgeous, but it is not a prerequisite for this workshop.

About the instructor: Seann Cantatore is an NYC-based musical comedian, absurdist, and professional kind person who combines musical characters, sketch comedy and utter ridiculousness in her gorgeously entertaining shows. Seann believes in humor that welcomes everyone to the party and seeks to bring people together through laughter and song. Seann has performed throughout New York, Washington DC, Michigan, California and recently returned from a Southeast solo comedy tour. She is currently recording a new musical comedy album and performing her solo musical comedy variety show throughout NYC and the U.S.

Sketch comedy takes over our lounge showroom, courtesy of DC's favorite troupe. While entertaining the DMV for a decade, Bad Medicine has also been showcasing around the country. Now they're bringing in some of their favorite performers from DC and beyond, presenting them in the city's top comedy spot.

May 20: Joy Provision and Seann Cantatore

About Bad Medicine: The Bad Medicine Show is high energy sketch comedy with a bent toward the dark, absurd reality of life. Each show brings you new hilarious characters, videos, music, and of course sketches about situations you hope you'll never be in. He leads volunteers through twisted scenarios, getting reactions that are almost beyond belief – and he does it all without humiliating anyone. Whether you’re on stage or watching from the audience, Flip’s show is unforgettable. And no, we weren’t hypnotized into writing this.

Short-Form Improv: Characters & Emotions

Students will play short-form games and exercises that they've seen on "Whose Line Is It Anway?", and in the DC Improv's Lounge. The class concludes with a graduation performance at the DC Improv. Prerequisite: Beginning Improv or permission of the instructor and principal.

Beginning Improv with Anna Bethel

June 14

Wednesdays, June 14 - July 19 (off 7/5), 7 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
