Picking up from the beginning level course, students will focus on making powerful choices at the top of the scene and how building fun and dynamic characters will enhance their overall experience. Through short-form scene work and games, students will explore how physicality, object work, character and interacting with their environment can inform the scene and set them up for success. October 20 - November 10, 12:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. (in-person weeks one, two and four; online individual coaching week three). Graduation show November 19 at the DC Improv.

Through hands-on training with instructor Chris Coccia, you'll learn how to prepare, polish and perform a five-minute stand-up comedy set. A tight, funny, five-minute set can carry you through a comedy career from start to stardom. It can be your open stage set, it can be your audition set and it can be your spot on any number of late-night shows. Lots of people have dreamed about giving stand-up comedy a try. This class gives you the structured environment that will finally get you on stage. Please note: Students must have access to a device with a webcam and microphone to participate in individual coaching sessions. The instructor commutes from Philadelphia to teach in person courses, and on occasion start time of the class may be delayed slightly due to Amtrak changes.

Tommy Davidson contributed countless unforgettable sketches to “In Living Color,” then stole the big screen in “Booty Call,” “Juwanna Man,” “Black Dynamite” and more. Saturday, September 21, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Maximum 12 students.

Writing a song can be daunting. Writing a funny song can be even daunting-er. In this workshop, musical comedian Seann Cantatore will break down the elements of comedy songwriting into a few simple steps, and then we’ll get right into the fun part. Each student will develop their own comedy song using improv, storytelling and their unique voice. You’ll be surprised by what you’re capable of creating in a short amount of time! And the class is there to support and collaborate with you along the way. If you enjoy utter silliness, this is the workshop for you. No need to be a trained singer or instrumentalist! Musical and vocal technique is gorgeous, but it is not a prerequisite for this workshop.

About the instructor: Seann Cantatore is an NYC musician-turned-comedian who combines musical theater, improv/sketch and silly goose-ness into her solo shows. A classical and jazz-trained singer and pianist with over 12 years of professional experience, Seann brings the “music” in musical comedy to a whole different level. She believes in humor that welcomes everyone to the party and seeks to bring people together through laughter and song. With her whimsical wit and inviting presence, audiences feel right at home belly-laughing and confronting their deepest emotional vulnerabilities, alike. She is excited to be on tour with her new one-woman musical, “In Order to Not Work a 9 to 5”.

Sketch comedy takes over our lounge showroom, courtesy of DC's favorite troupe. While entertaining the DMV for a decade, Bad Medicine has also been showcasing around the country. This class can do it all. People use Beginning Improv training to kick-start their creative mind, meet new people, and improve teamwork skills. It can give you great new perspective on your everyday interactions, introduce you to a new hobby, or even serve as a first step into the entertainment world. Best of all, it's a LOT of fun.

This is the course where you'll learn the basics of improv. You'll also learn a number of games you can play just about anywhere, learn how to develop scenes and create characters within seconds, and learn exercises to help create "group mind" to better work and act together. Remember, improv isn't just for actors -- anyone from teachers to corporate trainers to anyone wanting to build stronger teams can benefit from the collaborative art of improv comedy.

This course fine-tunes skills learned in Beginning Improv. Students will learn short-form improvisational games and exercises that harness the skills of listening, making strong choices, acceptance and other improv fundamentals. All this helps create interesting narratives which allow for engrossing character interactions. Students will play short-form games and exercises that they've seen on "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" and in the DC Improv's Lounge. AKA "Improv for Fun!" A class for people who want to learn improv games while having fun playing with other improvisers. While students are coached to learn new games and skills, less time is spent on preparing for a performance, and more time is spent on simply having fun. This class is both for beginning improvisers who want to learn the games they've seen in shows, and for experienced improv students who want to recapture a sense of playfulness in their games and scenes.

Wednesday, September 25 (online), meeting 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. This is an online class, conducted through Zoom. Participants must have a reliable Internet connection and a computer, phone or device with a web camera and microphone.

This engaging and interactive workshop designed to help you create memorable and multi-dimensional characters for storytelling and comedy. In this hands-on session, you’ll learn the essentials of character building, including developing backstories, exploring physicality and voice and understanding emotional depth and motivation. Through lessons and exercises, you'll bring your characters to life and enhance your creative skills. Whether you're a writer, performer, or just passionate about character creation, this workshop will provide you with practical tools and insights to craft compelling and believable characters.

About the Instructor: Nikki Frias has contributed to Pop Sugar, Forbes, The Daily Beast, and Boardroom. She is an author, writing coach and teacher specializing in helping people find their form of funny. Her book is titled “Does this Divorce Make Me Look Fat?” and she currently teaches comedy writing at The Writer’s Center, and improv at the Washington Improv Theatre. Her second book "Damn, you still single?" is expected to hit shelves later this year.

Tired of swiping? In this dating experiment, men compete on stage for one lucky bachelorette, with the little caveat that the men can't speak. Through a series of games - which includes calling the boys' moms and unlocking their phones - we narrow it down to two men. Finally, we hear their voices, and the lucky winning man is sent with our bachelorette to the bar for an immediate date. Audience members wear wristbands according to their relationship status, and a wingcouple (who wear actual wings) helps those of you who are too shy to make a move. Rick Glassman starred as Jack on the Amazon Original series "As We See It," as well as Edward on the ABC sitcom "Not Dead Yet." A Los Angeles-based stand-up comedian, writer, and actor, Glassman’s notable credits include a leading role in Bill Lawrence’s NBC ensemble sitcom, "Undateable," as well as playing Harold Ramis in David Wain’s National Lampoon biopic, "A Futile and Stupid Gesture." He also wrote, directed, and starred in an award-winning five-episode series, "The Sixth Lead," based on his experience starring on "Undateable."

The improv troupe Jive Turkey has been on the DC scene since 2008, performing sharp long-form improv in front of millions of screaming fans. (Millions might be a slight exaggeration, but you get the idea.) Wednesday, October 2 (online), meeting 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. This is an online class, conducted through Zoom. Participants must have a reliable Internet connection and a computer, phone or device with a web camera and microphone.

The Writers Room Workshop is to introduce participants to the basics of a writers room, including idea generation, character development, and collaborative writing techniques. Through a combination of lessons, group exercises, and peer feedback sessions, participants will hone their craft and learn to work effectively within a team. The course culminates in the creation and presentation of a final script, providing a comprehensive understanding of the writers' room dynamics and preparing writers for professional opportunities in the industry.

About the Instructor: Nikki Frias has contributed to Pop Sugar, Forbes, The Daily Beast, and Boardroom. She is an author, writing coach and teacher specializing in helping people find their form of funny. Her book is titled “Does this Divorce Make Me Look Fat?” and she currently teaches comedy writing at The Writer’s Center, and improv at the Washington Improv Theatre. Badar Tareen’s BrownTown isn’t just a comedy show – it’s a fan-favorite celebration of top South Asian comedians (e.g., Indian, Pakistani, etc.) from across the nation. As the DMV’s largest South Asian stand-up show, every BrownTown performance has sold out, and it’s now debuting at the DC Improv. Expect a night of high-energy, hilarious comedy with some of the best and brownest comedians around.

This particular show includes outstanding comics like Pallavi Gunalan from Los Angeles, who performs regularly at clubs like the Comedy Store, and nationally touring headliner Vik Pandya (NBC, Dry Bar) from Chicago. Additionally, the show includes a wildly popular Q&A where Badar, also a civil rights lawyer, poses outrageous, unrehearsed questions about race to a white comedian.

Ian Lara is a superbly talented Dominican-American stand-up comedian from Queens and one of the hottest rising comics in NYC. His sets touch on themes of growing up with immigrant parents, being unsure about his race and his born-again Christian father. Ian was also just named one of Variety’s 2023 10 Comics to Watch. It's a battle of the best! Every few months, the Improv brings great DMV comics together for a one-night stand-up tournament. Each "match" has comics doing sets, and the audience chooses one person to advance. At the end of the night, we have a champion. The winners represent the best of what DC's comedy scene has to offer.

For this special show, six former winners return to the Improv to battle for the title of Grand Champion. The best of the best will be duking it out ... and no matter which comedian is victorious, the audience always wins.

Some stand-ups really know how to work a room. Crowd work is the art of chatting with the audience when on stage. When done right, it creates a conversational atmosphere -- sometimes building a bridge to a comedian's best jokes, and sometimes leading to totally unscripted, in-the-moment laughs.

Wednesdays (online), October 23 – November 20 (off 11/6), meeting at 8 p.m. each week. This is an online class, conducted through Zoom meetings. Participants must have a reliable Internet connection and a computer, phone or device with a web camera and microphone.

A beginner's guide to sketch comedy that will take you from a premise to a fully realized sketch. This course will walk you through the elements of a sketch and how to write good sketches; it also features workshop sessions where you'll do read-throughs and get feedback on the writing assignments you'll be preparing. You'll walk away with a solid grounding in the foundations of sketch comedy, as well as the knowledge of how to craft and write sketches of your own.

Your instructors for the course come from Bad Medicine, DC's premier sketch comedy troupe. Trained by the Upright Citizens Brigade and Second City, Bad Medicine has performed at North American festivals like Montreal Sketchfest, NYC Sketchfest, Chicago Sketchfest, and Sketchfest Seattle. They also produce award-winning short comedy films, and a podcast about the craft of sketch comedy called Sketch Nerds.

Julie Kim is one of Canada’s top stand-up comedians, and she recently toured across North America doing 40 theatre shows with Ronny Chieng. She has contributed to the writing rooms of "Kim’s Convenience," "Run the Burbs," and "Still Standing." She was also a writer for Just for Laughs Montreal in 2022. Julie was a producer and writer for Simu Liu (Marvel’s "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings") as he hosted the 2022 and 2023 Juno Awards. Come out and wordplay! You're invited to watch or compete in Pun DMV, our pun contest. The night is hosted by Dana Fleitman, and it has two events:

The Freestyle: Each competitor chooses a punning theme, then prepares in advance a three-minute speech packed with puns inspired by that theme. On the night of the show, the competitors deliver their speeches on stage. The audience favorite wins! If you're interested in competing, let us know by filling out the form at this link.

The Tournament: An on-the-spot punning tournament featuring up to 20 people. At the start of each match, contestants are given a theme. They then take turns making up puns on the spot. People are eliminated when they're stumped. The last person standing moves on to the next round (or victory). Anyone in attendance can compete, and you can sign up on site when you arrive.

It's our annual visit from one of stand-up comedy's best. An all-time-great joke writer, Dave is at home in comedy clubs. After crushing it in our lounge showroom in 2022, Liza jumped up to the main showroom in 2023. Now she's back for more in 2025. Aries impersonated family members at the dinner table when he was a kid. He was on stage at comedy clubs by the time he was a teenager, and before he hit 20 he launched a career in show business that’s still going strong. Fahim is a comedy Renaissance man, finding success in stand-up, sketch comedy, TV writing and (naturally) dancing. A former aerospace engineer, the Seattle native released his third special "House Money" online, showcasing his sharp, light-hearted observational style to a global audience. • Patrons must be 18 or older to attend events or classes at the DC Improv. Any exceptions are clearly noted in the event descriptions.
• There is a two-item minimum per customer. This can be any combination of food items or beverages. Bottled water and soft drinks count as items. (The two-item minimum does not apply to comedy classes.)
• Coupons or passes for free admission cannot be used for a show listed as a "special event."

Seating Policies

• Matinees, the first show of any evening in our main showroom and all shows in our lounge showroom are seated by time of arrival. The earlier you arrive, the more options you'll have. Please note that the size of your party can affect what options are available to you, as certain tables and areas are designated for larger parties.
• "Late shows" in the main showroom have assigned seating. Assignments are made in order of ticket purchase. Generally speaking, the earlier you buy tickets, the closer you will be to the stage.
• If tickets are designated as being at a "reserved table," your party will have a table to itself. For general admission tickets, if your party does not fill an entire table, you may be sharing a table with other patrons.
