July 19

Tuesdays, July 19 - August 16, 7:00 - 9:30 p.m. Participants must be vaccinated against COVID-19 for this in-person class.

The result of quick thinking and reacting will give a performer the confidence to face any crowd. Prerequisite: Level 1 and 2 or permission from instructor and principal.

Tuesdays, November 1 - December 6 (off 11/22), 7 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. Participants in this class must be vaccinated against COVID-19.

AKA "Improv for Fun!" A class for people who want to learn improv games while having fun playing with other improvisers. The focus is on building confidence, communication skills and a sense of play -- improv training often helps people develop teamwork and creative thinking. While students are coached to learn new games and skills, less time is spent on preparing for a performance, and more time is spent on simply having fun. This class is both for beginning improvisers who want to learn the games they've seen in shows, and for experienced improv students who want to recapture a sense of playfulness in their games and scenes.

Hypnotist Flip Orley

July 21 - July 23

No two Flip Orley shows are the same, which is why he's been a DC Improv favorite since the 1990s. Flip uses hypnosis to turn audience members into the stars of the show. He leads volunteers through twisted scenarios, getting reactions that are almost beyond belief – and he does it all without humiliating anyone. Whether you’re on stage or watching from the audience, Flip’s show is unforgettable. And no, we weren’t hypnotized into writing this.

An accomplished stand-up, producer, writer, and actor, Rahmein now joins our comedy school to help you ramp up your comedy game. So what do you say? Comedy Kumite: Champions

July 24

It's a battle of the best! Every few months, the Improv brings great DMV comics together for a one-night stand-up tournament. Each "match" has comics doing sets, and the audience chooses one person to advance. At the end of the night, we have a champion. The winners represent the best of what DC's comedy scene has to offer.

For this special show, former winners return to the Improv to battle for the title of Grand Champion. The best of the best will be duking it out ... and no matter which comedian is victorious, the audience always wins.

Featuring: Eddie Morrison, Matty Litwack, Jamal Russell, Simone, Matt Brown, Matt Deakins

Pun DMV

August 04

Come out and wordplay! You're invited to watch or compete in Pun DMV, our pun contest. The night is hosted by Chris White, and it has two events:

The Tournament: An on-the-spot punning tournament featuring up to 20 people. At the start of each match, contestants are given a theme. They then take turns making up puns on the spot. People are eliminated when they're stumped. The last person standing moves on to the next round (or victory)! Anyone in attendance can compete, and you can sign up on site when you arrive.

The Freestyle: Each competitor chooses a punning theme, then prepares in advance a two-minute speech packed with puns inspired by that theme. On the night of the show, the competitors deliver their speeches on stage. We'll pick a few finalists, based on quality of puns and overall delivery. Then the audience will decide the winner by cheering. Competitors for August 4: Matthew Baker, Randy Staples, Logan Anbinder, Heather Joyce, Mike Kane, Roger Haynes, Jason Aul, Erika Ettin, JJ Janflone, Natalie Hix.

The winners of either contest get prizes from the Improv (and eternal glory)!

Read the Room with Tim Miller

August 04

Some stand-ups really know how to work a room. "Crowd work" is the art of chatting with the audience when on stage. When done right, it creates a conversational atmosphere -- sometimes building a bridge to a comedian's best jokes, and sometimes leading to totally unscripted, in-the-moment laughs.

Here in the DMV, Tim Miller is one of the best at crowd work. At "Read the Room" he hosts a lineup of local talents doing predominantly crowd work. Join him in our lounge showroom for what could be a unique, unforgettable live comedy experience.

Tim has been on Comedy Central & TRU TV and is also the host of Read the Room podcast on Podbean, iTunes and wherever you enjoy podcasts.

The lineup for August 4: Dee Ahmed, Kandace Saunders, Jamal Russell, Stephen Chen, Chelsea Shorte, Kevin Seefried

In every segment of her life, Margaret is honest, forthright, passionate, uproarious and always entertaining.

Ms. Pat

August 12 - August 13

From the mean streets of Atlanta to comedy stages around the world ... Ms. Pat has amazing stories to tell and a gift for making those stories hilarious. She was dealing drugs and had two children before she was 16. She spent her 20s raising six kids (including four of her sister’s) and scraping to get by. But those experiences became the foundation for her honest and fantastic stand-up -- and now, also her hit show on BET Plus! Since taking to the stage in 2003, she has never slowed down.

Bad Medicine Presents Sketch Night

August 20

Sketch comedy takes over our lounge showroom, courtesy of DC's favorite troupe. While entertaining the DMV for a decade, Bad Medicine has also been showcasing around the country. Now they're bringing in some of their favorite performers from DC and beyond, presenting them in the city's top comedy spot.

About Bad Medicine: The Bad Medicine Show is high energy sketch comedy with a bent toward the dark, absurd reality of life. Each show brings you new hilarious characters, videos, music, and of course sketches about situations you hope you'll never be in. They love to give folks an evening of laughter, but deep down, Bad Medicine is simply a group of friends trying hard to forget the political town they live in.

Short-Form Improv: Characters & Emotions

This course with instructor Anna Bethel builds on the skills learned in Beginning Improv to develop characters through emotion. Students will play short-form games and exercises that they've seen on "Whose Line Is It Anway?", and in the DC Improv's Lounge. The class concludes with a graduation performance at the DC Improv.
