Get In Focus (David Razowsky masterclass)
April 24
Wednesday, April 24, 6:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. Prerequisite: Level 2 improv classes or permission of the instructor and principal. Participants in this class must be vaccinated against COVID-19.
The challenge for most improvisers is trying to stick to “the rules” and believing “Yes, and” is the magic formula for a successful scene. Characters meander and never find their footing. In an instant, you travel from a state of fluidity to a mess of frustration and ask yourself, “How did I go wrong?” or “Now what?” These masterclasses provide methods and exercises that teach you to connect to your partner and the scene without worrying about the rules. Pick up "A Subversive’s Guide to Improvisation" and join the fun! (Books available for purchase at the workshops.)
Get in Focus: What are you focused on when you begin a scene? What great offers are you missing because you’re building a story instead of a relationship? Learn how paying attention to your heart and your breath leads to strong scenes and surprising dynamics.
About the instructor: David Razowsky studied, performed, taught, and directed at Second City with performers Stephen Colbert, Steve Carrell, and Michael Keegan-Key, among many others. He went on to serve as Artistic Director of Second City Hollywood for nine years before turning his attention to full-time coaching. He has directed and taught his methodology to individuals and groups in the US and worldwide.

Point of View: It’s the bedrock of every relationship. You state your point of view, and your partner says theirs. Sounds easy, right? But how often are scenes derailed because the actors don’t hold onto their points of view or mindlessly add unnecessary details that throw the scene off course? Recognizing, maintaining, and evolving a point of view creates confident and exciting scenes.

Stage Dynamics: Now that we’re back improvising on stage, your awareness of the power of where you are on stage is vital to great scenework. The dynamics between you and your partner are defined not just by your dialogue but by where you are on stage when speaking. Each inch of that stage is there to help you better define your relationships, build tension, and make surprising discoveries. Explore the hidden treasures that lie beneath your feet.

May 09
Tiger Daughter is a new solo show by actor and musician Charlene Kaye (Succession, Starkid, SNL) about what happens when you rebel against your immigrant Chinese Tiger Mom’s dreams of you playing Carnegie Hall by time you’re 12, and instead become her worst nightmare: a slutty shredder in an all girl Guns N’ Roses cover band called Guns N’ Hoses (with the slogan “Welcome to the Vajungle!”) Your Tiger Mom then has to watch the nightmare version of the American Dream she envisioned for her firstborn daughter play out in front of her eyes…while also stomaching the fact that her ultimate dream was to be a famous musician herself.
The show is an unhinged, shocking and deeply felt journey exploring the tension between Charlene and her mother, Lily, as Lily offers unsolicited advice on how Charlene should live her life, and Charlene fights for her mother’s respect as an Asian American rock star—carrying inherited baggage along the way. It’s a story about how we endlessly misunderstand each other, eventually asking the question: Do we need to understand people in order to love them?

Come out and wordplay! You're invited to watch or compete in Pun DMV, our pun contest. The night is hosted by Dana Fleitman, and it has two events:
The Freestyle: Each competitor chooses a punning theme, then prepares in advance a three-minute speech packed with puns inspired by that theme. On the night of the show, the competitors deliver their speeches on stage. The audience favorite wins! If you're interested in competing, let us know by filling out the form at this link.
The Tournament: An on-the-spot punning tournament featuring up to 20 people. At the start of each match, contestants are given a theme. They then take turns making up puns on the spot. People are eliminated when they're stumped. The last person standing moves on to the next round (or victory). Anyone in attendance can compete, and you can sign up on site when you arrive.
The winners of either contest get cash prizes from the Improv (and eternal glory)!

May 23 - June 13
Some stand-ups really know how to work a room. Crowd work is the art of chatting with the audience when on stage. When done right, it creates a conversational atmosphere -- sometimes building a bridge to a comedian's best jokes, and sometimes leading to totally unscripted, in-the-moment laughs.
Here in the DMV, Tim Miller is one of the best at crowd work. At "Read the Room" he hosts a lineup of local talents doing a mix of crowd work and material. Join him in our lounge showroom for a unique, unforgettable live comedy experience.
Tim has been on Comedy Central & TRU TV and is also the host of Read the Room podcast on Podbean, iTunes and wherever you enjoy podcasts.

Freaks & Geeks: A Story District /Mortified DC Co-Production
May 23
Story District returns to join forces with Mortified DC for a night of absolute mortification at the DC Improv!
Mortified stars everyday adults sharing their most embarrassingly real teenage diary entries, poems, love letters, and locker notes...in front of total strangers. Hailed as a "cultural phenomenon" by Newsweek, this is a comic excavation of strange and extraordinary things we created as teens. Mortified DC is produced by Alex Hewett and Adam Ruben (a longtime Story District favorite).
In this collaboration, we will alternate between Mortified-style first-hand readings and Story District-style true tales (with no notes). Though the format is different, the take-away is the same: adolescence is confusing and challenging, but with time and maturity, it makes for hilarious material.
From Story District: Clara Shannon, Keith Mellnick, & Gifty Amponsem
From Mortified: Noam Osband, Aaron Drew, & Don Palmar
With Hosts: Adam Ruben & Scott C. Hollingsworth

Steve Byrne
July 11
Steve is a crowd favorite, bringing a positive vibe, tons of energy, and a classy looking outfit to every performance. For three seasons, he starred in "Sullivan and Son" on TBS -- a show built around his upbringing as an Irish-Korean living in Pittsburgh. He has put out numerous hour-long comedy specials, which have been seen on Comedy Central, Netflix and more. Steve's act has evolved right along with Steve -- and it's all great. As a writer/director, Steve has produced two of the best movies about comedy that we've ever seen: the documentary "Always Amazing" and the feature film "The Opening Act."

Improv with Kaneez Workshop
September 07
Saturday, September 7, 12 p.m. - 3 p.m.
Kaneez Surka’s "Improv With Kaneez" workshop is an extensive insight into the world of improv comedy where she incorporates basic improv tactics into well-crafted team building exercises and fun games to enhance productivity and focus. The workshop will be conducted over a 3-4 hour session engaging in fun interactive exercises that promote healthy leadership qualities and the ability to think outside the box.
Having trained at two of New York’s finest improv schools - the Magnet Theater and the Upright Citizen’s Brigade, Manhattan - Kaneez went on to build an improv scene in India and is lovingly known as the Improv Queen. Having taught improv to hundreds of people around India she also remains the proud creator of India’s only improv format shows - ‘Improv All Stars’ and ‘Something from Nothing’ on Amazon Prime. She is the leading Improv trainer and artist in the Indian comedy circuit and now wants to expand into the USA.
Improvisation is essentially "on the spot" or spontaneous moment of sudden inventiveness that can just come to mind, body and spirit as an inspiration. In Improv nothing is prepared, rehearsed or premeditated and that is an enormous encouragement to creativity. Learning to trust your intuition, and the people around you resulting in the invention of new thought patterns, new practices, new structures or symbols are all part of the improv experience.

- Coupons or passes for free admission cannot be used for a show listed as a "special event."
Seating Policies
- Matinees, the first show of any evening in our main showroom and all shows in our lounge showroom are seated by time of arrival. The earlier you arrive, the more options you'll have. Please note that the size of your party can affect what options are available to you, as certain tables and areas are designated for larger parties.
- "Late shows" in the main showroom have assigned seating. Assignments are made in order of ticket purchase. Generally speaking, the earlier you buy tickets, the closer you will be to the stage.
- If tickets are designated as being at a "reserved table," your party will have a table to itself. For general admission tickets, if your party does not fill an entire table, you may be sharing a table with other patrons.

Moshe Kasher
October 24 - October 26
Moshe Kasher always has an edge, whether he's performing razor sharp material or doing unbelievably good crowd work. (He even recorded a crowd work album at our club a few years ago.) As a writer, he's penned two successful memoirs. And he's been a favorite at Comedy Central, working on roasts, writing and acting for "Another Period," and hosting his own show "Problematic." Check out one of the most inventive and hilarious comics working today.
