Bad Medicine Presents Sketch Night

August 20

with Rails Comedy and Seann Cantatore

Sketch comedy takes over our lounge showroom, courtesy of DC's favorite troupe. While entertaining the DMV for a decade, Bad Medicine has also been showcasing around the country. Now they're bringing in some of their favorite performers from DC and beyond, presenting them in the city's top comedy spot.

About Bad Medicine: The Bad Medicine Show is high energy sketch comedy with a bent toward the dark, absurd reality of life. Each show brings you new hilarious characters, videos, music, and of course sketches about situations you hope you'll never be in. They love to give folks an evening of laughter, but deep down, Bad Medicine is simply a group of friends trying hard to forget the political town they live in.

Short-Form Improv: Characters & Emotions

September 13

Tuesdays, September 13 - October 11, 7 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. Graduation show Monday, October 17 at 7:30 p.m.. Participants in this class must be vaccinated against COVID-19.

This course with instructor Anna Bethel builds on the skills learned in Beginning Improv to develop characters through emotion. Specific characters grounded in strong emotions are why we care about a scene. Expanding off the "Yes and..." foundation, students will learn how to engage with each other while creating interesting characters who interact with each other in meaningful ways. Students will play short-form games and exercises that they've seen on "Whose Line Is It Anway?", and in the DC Improv's Lounge. The class concludes with a graduation performance at the DC Improv. Prerequisite: Beginning Improv or permission of the instructor and principal.

AKA "Improv for Fun!" A class for people who want to learn improv games while having fun playing with other improvisers. The focus is on building confidence, communication skills and a sense of play -- improv training often helps people develop teamwork and creative thinking. While students are coached to learn new games and skills, less time is spent on preparing for a performance, and more time is spent on simply having fun. This class is both for beginning improvisers who want to learn the games they've seen in shows, and for experienced improv students who want to recapture a sense of playfulness in their games and scenes.

Pun & Games

September 29

with Grassroots Comedy

A PUNdamentally silly new game show where comedians compete, the audience judges, and everybody wins - plus, we're raising fun for a local cause (organization TBD)! In this interactive show from Grassroots Comedy DC, comedians and audience members out-clever each other through several rounds of not-very-intense game play. Think JackBoxesque games with your funniest friends for a good cause, plus the opportunity to play along or just judge others. Hosted by Pun DMV's Dana Fleitman and Grassroots Comedy's Chris Blackwood.

About Grassroots Comedy: Grassroots Comedy (formerly Grassroots Comedy DC) sits at the crossroads of comedy and advocacy. Simply put, we make humans laugh while improving humanity. Our goal is to use comedy to support local nonprofits in their mission to make DC (and the world) a better place for all.

Read the Room with Tim Miller

October 20

Some stand-ups really know how to work a room. "Crowd work" is the art of chatting with the audience when on stage. When done right, it creates a conversational atmosphere -- sometimes building a bridge to a comedian's best jokes, and sometimes leading to totally unscripted, in-the-moment laughs.

Here in the DMV, Tim Miller is one of the best at crowd work. At "Read the Room" he hosts a lineup of local talents doing predominantly crowd work. Join him in our lounge showroom for what could be a unique, unforgettable live comedy experience.

Tim has been on Comedy Central & TRU TV and is also the host of Read the Room podcast on Podbean, iTunes and wherever you enjoy podcasts.

The lineup for October 20: TBA

Bad Medicine presents Sketch Night

October 29

Sketch comedy takes over our lounge showroom, courtesy of DC's favorite troupe. While entertaining the DMV for a decade, Bad Medicine has also been showcasing around the country. Now they're bringing in some of their favorite performers from DC and beyond, presenting them in the city's top comedy spot.

The October lineup is TBA.

Pun DMV

November 16

All customers (including general admission) are seated at tables.

Come out and wordplay! You're invited to watch or compete in Pun DMV, our pun contest. The night is hosted by Dana Fleitman, and it has two events:

The Tournament: An on-the-spot punning tournament featuring up to 20 people. At the start of each match, contestants are given a theme. They then take turns making up puns on the spot. People are eliminated when they're stumped. The last person standing moves on to the next round (or victory). Anyone in attendance can compete, and you can sign up on site when you arrive.

The Freestyle: Each competitor chooses a punning theme, then prepares in advance a three-minute speech packed with puns inspired by that theme. On the night of the show, the competitors deliver their speeches on stage. The audience favorite wins! If you are interested in competing in this event complete the form at this link.

The winners of either contest get prizes from the Improv (and eternal glory)!

Donnell Rawlings

November 25 - November 27

Thanksgiving is a time when people head home to see their families ... and for Donnell, the DMV is home. He went to TC Williams in Alexandria, and he started his showbiz career by heckling performers at DC comedy clubs before taking the stage himself. His success as a stand-up landed him a spot on "Chappelle's Show," securing him a spot in pop culture history, and he became a favorite on some huge East Coast radio shows (including the WPGC morning show). Bring your family out to laugh with one of our favorites.
