AKA "Improv for Fun!" A class for people who want to learn improv games while having fun playing with other improvisers. The focus is on building confidence, communication skills and a sense of play -- improv training often helps people develop teamwork and creative thinking. While students are coached to learn new games and skills, less time is spent on preparing for a performance, and more time is spent on simply having fun. This class is both for beginning improvisers who want to learn the games they've seen in shows, and for experienced improv students who want to recapture a sense of playfulness in their games and scenes.

We Hate Movies
April 26
For nearly a decade, We Hate Movies has been ripping on the worst movies to hit the big screen, including white-guy-karate pictures, modern-day superhero epics, or misbegotten 90s thrillers. Hosts Andrew Jupin, Stephen Sajdak, Chris Cabin, and Eric Szyszka bring their antic and uproarious takes on bad movies to the stage once again. The boys will be on hand to break down everything from incomprehensible accents and cheap CGI to dated references and one liners that make you yearn for the sweet embrace of the grave. There might also be talk of Secundus and cold Burger King. The movie for this show is TBA.
At the request of the artists, patrons for these shows must present proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 to be admitted to the venue. Proof of vaccination can be either your completed vaccination card, or a legible photo of a card saved to your phone. Patrons for this show must present proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 to be admitted to the venue. "Proof" can be a completed vaccination card or a readable photo of that card saved to your phone, along with a photo ID. Negative COVID tests will not be accepted as a substitute.
Come out and wordplay! You're invited to watch or compete in Pun DMV, our pun contest. The night is hosted by Dana Fleitman, and it has two events:
The Tournament: An on-the-spot punning tournament featuring up to 20 people. At the start of each match, contestants are given a theme. They then take turns making up puns on the spot. People are eliminated when they're stumped. The last person standing moves on to the next round (or victory)! Anyone in attendance can compete, and you can sign up on site when you arrive.
The Freestyle: Each competitor chooses a punning theme, then prepares in advance a two-minute speech packed with puns inspired by that theme. On the night of the show, the competitors deliver their speeches on stage. We'll pick a few finalists, based on quality of puns and overall delivery. Then the audience will decide the winner by cheering. If you'd like to compete in the Freestyle for the May 4 show let us know via the form at this link.
The winners of either contest get prizes from the Improv (and eternal glory)!

Steve is a crowd favorite, bringing a positive vibe, tons of energy, and a classy looking outfit to every performance. For three seasons, he starred in "Sullivan and Son" on TBS -- a show built around his upbringing as an Irish-Korean living in Pittsburgh. He has put out numerous hour-long comedy specials, which have been seen on Comedy Central, Netflix and more. Steve's act has evolved right along with Steve -- and it's all great. As a writer/director, Steve has produced two of the best movies about comedy that we've ever seen: the documentary "Always Amazing" and the feature film "The Opening Act."

Some stand-ups really know how to work a room. "Crowd work" is the art of chatting with the audience when on stage. When done right, it creates a conversational atmosphere -- sometimes building a bridge to a comedian's best jokes, and sometimes leading to totally unscripted, in-the-moment laughs.
Here in the DMV, Tim Miller is one of the best at crowd work. At "Read the Room" he hosts a lineup of local talents doing predominantly crowd work. Join him in our lounge showroom for what could be a unique, unforgettable live comedy experience.

June 09 - June 11
At the request of the artist, patrons for these shows must present proof of vaccination against COVID-19 to be admitted to the venue. "Proof of vaccination" can be a completed vaccination card or a readable photo of that card saved to your phone. Negative COVID tests will not be accepted as a substitute.
Ron is one of the most distinctive voices in comedy – in terms of both his material and his actual voice. His giggly, laid-back stand-up comedy made him the toast of Portland, Ore. But in the last few years he has busted out on the national stage, with roles in sitcoms (“Undateable” and “Powerless”), movies (“Trolls”) and lots more. His one-hour Comedy Central special "Giggle Fit" broke all kinds of ratings records and he even has a new podcast called "Gettin' Better." Check out a true original.

Ashley hails from Delaware (and is the self-proclaimed "second-most famous person from the state" after Joe Biden), began standup comedy in Atlanta, and lives in and performs all over New York City. She's (probably) been called "the voice of her generation" by someone, and Popdust says "Ashley Hesseltine breathed new life to jokes about basic white womanhood; she could've easily given us ten minutes of "wine and bad boyfriends, amirite LADIES?", and instead she gave us vulnerability and raw honesty (who among us DOESN'T relate to stalking the ex that they dumped?)."

Reading the Room w/ Anna Bethel
July 19
Tuesdays, July 19 - August 16, 7:00 - 9:30 p.m. Participants must be vaccinated against COVID-19 for this in-person class.
In improv comedy the audience is the biggest uncontrollable factor a performer faces. Join Anna Bethel to explore the skill of "reading a room" in order to harness the admiration of the audience. Students will work together in exercises to improve spontaneous mental recall and learn how to perform and moderate short-form improv games. The result of quick thinking and reacting will give a performer the confidence to face any crowd. Prerequisite: Level 1 and 2 or permission from instructor and principal.
All sales are final. There are no refunds or exchanges.

Buy TicketsHypnotist Flip Orley
July 21 - July 23
No two Flip Orley shows are the same, which is why he's been a DC Improv favorite since the 1990s. Flip uses hypnosis to turn audience members into the stars of the show. He leads volunteers through twisted scenarios, getting reactions that are almost beyond belief – and he does it all without humiliating anyone. Whether you’re on stage or watching from the audience, Flip’s show is unforgettable. And no, we weren’t hypnotized into writing this.

Margaret Cho
August 05 - August 06
Margaret Cho could be called the Queen of all Media, having conquered the worlds of film, television, books, music and theatre. She has five Grammy Award nominations (two for music albums, "Cho Dependent" and "American Myth") and one Emmy nod for her groundbreaking work on "30 Rock." In 2017, Rolling Stone magazine named her one of the 50 Best Stand-Up Comics, calling her "the sort of funny, sex-positive feminist and LGBT activist younger comics continue to look up to." Equally as important as her creative side is the causes she is passionate about, including her charitable work with gay rights and anti-bullying campaigns. In every segment of her life, Margaret is honest, forthright, passionate, uproarious and always entertaining.

Ms. Pat
August 11 - August 13
From the mean streets of Atlanta to comedy stages around the world ... Ms. Pat has amazing stories to tell and a gift for making those stories hilarious. She was dealing drugs and had two children before she was 16. She spent her 20s raising six kids (including four of her sister’s) and scraping to get by. But those experiences became the foundation for her honest and fantastic stand-up -- and now, also her hit show on BET Plus! Since taking to the stage in 2003, she has never slowed down.
