Pun DMV

February 08 - May 04

Come out and wordplay! You're invited to watch or compete in Pun DMV, our pun contest. The night is hosted by Dana Fleitman, and it has two events:

The Freestyle: Each competitor chooses a punning theme, then prepares in advance a three-minute speech packed with puns inspired by that theme. On the night of the show, the competitors deliver their speeches on stage. The audience favorite wins! If you are interested in competing in this event complete the form at this link.

The Tournament: An on-the-spot punning tournament featuring up to 20 people. At the start of each match, contestants are given a theme. They then take turns making up puns on the spot. People are eliminated when they're stumped. The last person standing moves on to the next round (or victory). Anyone in attendance can compete, and you can sign up on site when you arrive.

The winners of either contest get cash prizes from the Improv (and eternal glory)!

All sales are final. Refunds and exchanges are offered only when a show is canceled or rescheduled.

Get in Focus (David Razowsky)

February 22

Wednesday, February 22, 6:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. Prerequisite: Level 2 improv classes or permission of the instructor and principal. For the duration of the course, at the request of the instructor we are requiring students to wear a mask indoors, except when actively eating or drinking. Participants in this class must be vaccinated against COVID-19.

The challenge for most improvisers is trying to stick to “the rules” and believing “Yes, and” is the magic formula for a successful scene. Characters meander and never find their footing. In an instant, you travel from a state of fluidity to a mess of frustration and ask yourself, “How did I go wrong?” or “Now what?” Razowsky’s masterclasses provide methods and exercises that teach you to connect to your partner and the scene without worrying about the rules and responding with a “yes, and” after every line.

Get in Focus: What are you focused on when you begin a scene? What great offers are you missing because you’re building a story instead of a relationship? Learn how paying attention to your heart and your breath leads to strong scenes and surprising dynamics.

About the instructor: David Razowsky studied, performed, taught, and directed at Second City with performers Stephen Colbert, Steve Carrell, and Michael Keegan-Key, among many others. He went on to serve as Artistic Director of Second City Hollywood for nine years before turning his attention to full-time coaching. He has directed and taught his methodology to individuals and groups in the US and worldwide.

Point of View (David Razowsky)

February 23

Thursday, February 23, 6:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. Prerequisite: Level 2 improv classes or permission of the instructor and principal. For the duration of the course, at the request of the instructor we are requiring students to wear a mask indoors, except when actively eating or drinking.

Point of View: It’s the bedrock of every relationship. You state your point of view, and your partner says theirs. Sounds easy, right? But how often are scenes derailed because the actors don’t hold onto their points of view or mindlessly add unnecessary details that throw the scene off course? Recognizing, maintaining, and evolving a point of view creates confident and exciting scenes.

About the instructor: David Razowsky studied, performed, taught, and directed at Second City with performers Stephen Colbert, Steve Carrell, and Michael Keegan-Key, among many others. Finesse Mitchell

February 23 - February 25

Finesse spun early success in the stand-up game into a four-year run on “Saturday Night Live.” His smooth and hilarious style has kept him busy on the small screen -- whether it's acting, voiceover work or being a favorite panelist on tons of talk shows. He pops up regularly on comedy concert tours. And best of all, you can still see him up close in the comedy clubs. He makes his return to the DC Improv this winter.

February 24

Friday, February 24, 6:30 p.m.

Spatial Relationship: If you don’t move, neither do your scenes. The dynamics between you and your partner are defined not just by your dialogue but by where you are on stage when you’re speaking. Learn how physical distance conveys strong points of view, status, and dramatic relationships.

Weekend Masterclass with David Razowsky

February 25

February 25 and 26, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. each day (one-hour lunch break). Prerequisite: This weekend workshop is open only to students who have attended at least one of the week’s previous workshops or a masterclass with Razowsky in person or virtually. For the duration of the course, at the request of the instructor we are requiring students to wear a mask indoors, except when actively eating or drinking. Participants in this class must be vaccinated against COVID-19.

Weekend Masterclass: The Weekend Masterclass builds on Razowsky’s methodology of mindfulness, emotional awareness, kinesthetic responses, and truthfulness to create deep and surprising scenes. We will review the basics of connectedness and fly from there. This is gonna be good!

March 07 - April 19

Available: Wednesdays, April 19 - May 17, 7 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. Participants in this class must be vaccinated against COVID-19.

AKA "Improv for Fun!" A class for people who want to learn improv games while having fun playing with other improvisers. The focus is on building confidence, communication skills and a sense of play -- improv training often helps people develop teamwork and creative thinking. While students are coached to learn new games and skills, less time is spent on preparing for a performance, and more time is spent on simply having fun. This class is both for beginning improvisers who want to learn the games they've seen in shows, and for experienced improv students who want to recapture a sense of playfulness in their games and scenes.

The piece takes place completely in the dark. The BAT gives you, the improviser, the opportunity to sharpen your improv skills, increase fearlessness and decrease mental limitations that may be in the way of elevating your performance. Read the Room

March 16

with Tim Miller

Some stand-ups really know how to work a room. "Crowd work" is the art of chatting with the audience when on stage. When done right, it creates a conversational atmosphere -- sometimes building a bridge to a comedian's best jokes, and sometimes leading to totally unscripted, in-the-moment laughs.

Here in the DMV, Tim Miller is one of the best at crowd work. At "Read the Room" he hosts a lineup of local talents doing predominantly crowd work. Join him in our lounge showroom for what could be a unique, unforgettable live comedy experience.

Tim has been on Comedy Central & TRU TV and is also the host of Read the Room podcast on Podbean, iTunes and wherever you enjoy podcasts.

The lineup for January 19: Rahmein Mostafavi, Chelsea Shorte, Dewayne White, Rola, Pete Bergen

Bad Medicine Presents Sketch Night

March 18

Sketch comedy takes over our lounge showroom, courtesy of DC's favorite troupe. While entertaining the DMV for a decade, Bad Medicine has also been showcasing around the country. Now they're bringing in some of their favorite performers from DC and beyond, presenting them in the city's top comedy spot.

January 28: Jay Malsky and Homeless Fireparty

March 18: Lots of Feelings and Amanda Xeller

About Bad Medicine: The Bad Medicine Show is high energy sketch comedy with a bent toward the dark, absurd reality of life. Each show brings you new hilarious characters, videos, music, and of course sketches about situations you hope you'll never be in. They love to give folks an evening of laughter, but deep down, Bad Medicine is simply a group of friends trying hard to forget the political town they live in.

Short-Form: Relationships & Story with Conor O'Rourke

April 11

Tuesdays, April 11 - May 9, 7 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. Graduation show Tuesday, May 16.

This course fine-tunes skills learned in Beginning Improv. Students will learn short-form improvisational games and exercises that harness the skills of listening, making strong choices, acceptance and other improv fundamentals. All this helps create interesting narratives which allow for engrossing character interactions. Students will play short-form games and exercises that they've seen on "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" and in the DC Improv's Lounge. Prerequisite: Beginning Improv or permission of the instructor and principal.

About the Instructor: Conor O'Rourke has been performing comedy for more than 14 years. He was first introduced to improv in college, and he joined ComedySportz in 2009. Conor helped create the group Porkchop Volcano in 2013, which has performed at the DC Improv, Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse, Brightbox Theater, the Charm City Comedy Festival and more. He has extensive experience leading corporate team-building workshops and has taught introductory improv classes both the DC Improv and the Comedy Spot (in Northern Virginia). Conor still regularly performs all around the DMV.

Finding Your Voice: Comedy Songwriting with Seann Cantatore

May 20

Saturday, May 20, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Maximum 12 students.

Writing a song can be daunting. Writing a funny song can be even daunting-er. In this workshop, musical comedian Seann Cantatore will break down the elements of comedy songwriting into a few simple steps, and then we’ll get right into the fun part. Each student will develop their own comedy song using improv, storytelling and their unique voice. You’ll be surprised by what you’re capable of creating in a short amount of time! And the class is there to support and collaborate with you along the way. If you enjoy utter silliness, this is the workshop for you. No need to be a trained singer or instrumentalist! Musical and vocal technique is gorgeous, but it is not a prerequisite for this workshop.

About the instructor: Seann Cantatore is an NYC-based musical comedian, absurdist, and professional kind person who combines musical characters, sketch comedy and utter ridiculousness in her gorgeously entertaining shows. Seann believes in humor that welcomes everyone to the party and seeks to bring people together through laughter and song. Seann has performed throughout New York, Washington DC, Michigan, California and recently returned from a Southeast solo comedy tour. She is currently recording a new musical comedy album and performing her solo musical comedy variety show throughout NYC and the U.S.

Short-Form Improv: Characters & Emotions

June 13

Tuesdays, June 13 - July 18 (off 7/4), 7 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. Graduation show Monday, July 24 at 7:30 p.m. Participants in this class must be vaccinated against COVID-19.

This course with instructor Anna Bethel builds on the skills learned in Beginning Improv to develop characters through emotion. Specific characters grounded in strong emotions are why we care about a scene. Expanding off the "Yes and..." foundation, students will learn how to engage with each other while creating interesting characters who interact with each other in meaningful ways. Students will play short-form games and exercises that they've seen on "Whose Line Is It Anway?", and in the DC Improv's Lounge. The class concludes with a graduation performance at the DC Improv. Prerequisite: Beginning Improv or permission of the instructor and principal.

All sales are final. There are no refunds or exchanges.

Class Policies

  • Patrons must be 18 or older to attend events or classes at the DC Improv. Any exceptions are clearly noted in the event descriptions on dcimprov.com.
  • Participants in this class must be vaccinated against COVID-19 and produce proof of vaccination (such as a completed vaccination card) at the start of the first session. If you have any questions about this policy, please e-mail info@dcimprov.com.

Beginning Improv with Anna Bethel

June 14

Wednesdays, June 14 - July 19 (off 7/5), 7 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.

All sales are final. There are no refunds or exchanges.
